Hiking and Horse Trails
Note: Except for the first three trails, the order of the trails listed and their
information is taken from the Burr Oak State Park brochure and has not yet been field-checked.
Trail Heads
- Tom Jenkins Dam Trail Head (Foot only)
- Going from Athens to the park on OH-13, go through the town of Trimble, and continue
north. Turn right at the sign for Tom Jenkins Dam. The Buckeye
Trail is accessible from here (and it is also the North Country
Trail and the American Discovery Trail). The
Lakeview Trail is also accessible from here.
- Buckeye Trail Head (Foot only)
- Going from Athens to the park on OH-13, go through the town of Trimble, and continue north
to OH-78. Turn right and look for the sign for Burr Oak Lodge. Turn left at the lodge turnoff,
and the trail head will be at the next road fork. The Buckeye Trail is
accessible from here, and the Red Fox Trail is nearby. The
Buckeye Loop Trail and the Chipmunk Trail are also accessible from
here.
Trails
- Buckeye Trail (foot only)
- This is a major hiking trail, looping around the entire state of Ohio. The Buckeye Trail
loops through Burr Oak State Park. It enters the park on Morgan County Road 15, then mostly
follows the lake shore on the eastern, then southern, then western shore of the lake to Tom
Jenkins Dam, then extends westward into the Wayne national Forest. More Information

- North Country Trail (foot only)
- This is a major hiking trail about 4,000 miles in length, extending from upstate New York
to North Dakota. It largely coincides with the Buckeye Trail in Ohio. More Information on the North Country
Trail
- America Discovery Trail (foot only)
- This is a major hiking trail extending coast-to-coast across the United States. It begins at
the Atlantic Ocean coast on the Delmarva Peninsula in Delaware, and ends at the Pacific Ocean
in northern California. It most coincides with the Buckeye Trail through Ohio. More Information on the America Discovery

- Lakeview Trail (foot only)
- This is a 3.5-mile trail, blazed in yellow, that extends from along the north shore of Burr
Oak Lake from the Tom Jenkins Dam to the main campground at Burr Oak.
- Ravine Trail (foot only)
- This is a 1.5-mile section of the Buckeye Trail that extends from Dock
#2 to the boat ramp at Burr Oak Lodge. It connects with the Chipmunk Trail
at the east end.
- Chipmunk Trail (foot only)
- This is a 0.5-mile section of the Buckeye Trail that extends from the
boat at Burr Oak Lodge to the Buckeye Trail Head. It connects with
the Ravine Trail at the west end.
- Red Fox Trail (foot only)
- The Red Fox trail is a 0.7-mile trail, blazed in red, that extends from the junction of the
Ravine Trail and the Chipmunk Trail to the Burr
Oak Lodge road near the park entrance.
- Buckeye Loop Trail (foot only)
- The Buckeye Loop trail is a 3-mile trail loop route that uses about 2 miles of the
Buckeye Trail and adds about another mile of trail to complete the loop. It is blazed in white, and
begins at the Buckeye Trail Head.
- Backpack/Bridle Trail (foot and horse)
- This is a 7-mile trail extending along the western lakeshore from the group camp/horsemen's area to the
junction of County Road 58 and Township Road 298, north of the north end of the lake. It is blazed in yellow.
- Campground Trail (foot only)
- This is a one-mile trail, blazed in white, extending from the camp check-in station at the main campground
to the group camp/horsemen's area.
- Tanager Trail (foot only)
- This is a 0.5-mile trail, blazed in red, extending across the middle of the loop in the
Buckeye Loop Trail.
- Red Bridle Trail (horse)
- This is a 7.5-mile horse trail, parallelling the Backpack/Bridle Trail, but up on
the ridge, and enabling a complete 14.5-mile loop with that trail. It is blazed in red.
- Blue Bridle Trail (horse)
- This is a 3.9-mile horse trail, connecting with the Red Bridle Trail and extending to the
campground road. It is blazed in blue.
