MAWE hikes are regularly the second Sunday of each month, normally embarking at 2:00 pm. In most cases, carpooling options are available.

  • February, 2006 - Athens Conservancy Winter Hike on the Rock House Trail @ Sells Park
  • March, 2006 - 1st MAWE hike with Jon Knouse @ Sells Park and Milliron Farm
  • April, 2006 - Great Hike on the Zaleski Backpack Trail
  • May, 2006 - Hike at Strouds Run w/ Bob Scott Placier and lots of children.
  • June, 2006 - Hike with naturalists David Horn, Bob Scott Placier, Paul & Cathy Knoop on their 70 acre homestead near Rockbridge
  • August, 2006 - Hike w/ Horns, Bob Scott Placier & others @ Desonaire Preserve
  • September, 2006 - Hike @ Lake Katherine with Phil Zito, Steve Cochran and others
  • October, 2006 - Visit in apothecary/hike with Paul Strauss and others @ Equinox Botanicals
  • November, 2006 - Hike on Shagbark Tree Farm in Perry County with owner Gailen Maxwell, naturalists and founding AOA members Paul Knoop, Brian Blair (president) and 29 other interested folks, including lots of children!!!!
  • December, 2006 - Hike @ Trimble Wildlife area on a small portion of the Buckeye Trail which has been adopted by the Sunday Creek Watershed Group (740-767-2225). Mike Gosnell, Jim Davidson and Jon Knouse led the hike that 29 other folks, including lots of children attended!!!!
  • January, 2007 - Thirteen hardy souls braved adverse weather to hike with Bob Scott Placier at his Vinton County abode. A good time had by all.
  • February 11, 2007 - "Frosty" hike with Jeff Johnson & Jim Davidson @ Christmas Rocks Nature Preserve, a "by permit only" ODNR Nature Preserve!
  • March 11, 2007 - Folks (36) joined David Hosack, Forest Manager for the U.S. Forest Service @ 3200 acre Vinton Furnace Experimental Forest which is a component of the 16,500 acre Raccoon Ecological Management Area (REMA).
  • April 8, 2007 - Bob Scott Placier lead us on a delightful loop trail hike @ the Boord Preserve in Washington County
  • May 6, 2007 - David Horn lead folks on loop trail in search for the Canada Mayflower and other flora at the Boord Preserve.
  • May 13, 2007 - ODNR Conservationist, Jeff Johnson, Tom Shisler, Wahkeena Nature Preserve Naturalist and others lead us on a hike through the, by permit only Rhododendron Cove Nature Preserve. It was awesome!
  • June 10, 2007 - Three different hikes at the by permit only Crane Hollow Nature Preserve where Jane Ann Ellis is graciously shared her 1200 acre home & capable naturalist friends with us! What a blessing this hike was!
  • July 8, 2007 - Bob Scott Placier, David Horn and other naturalists guided us along the Ridges Cemeteries Nature Walk in Athens. Fun was had by all!
  • August 12, 2007 - Paul Knoop lead 19 of us on a hike through their AOA conservation easement protected land, including an 8 year old (65 species) tall grass prairie. We also visited the wildflower prairie, sans tall grasses, at the Knoop's home.
  • September 9, 2007 - Andrea Anes and Bill Ackenbom lead us a delightful hike through their Perry County woodland and prairie.
  • October 9, 2007 - David Horn and 10 other hikers enjoyed a 4 mile loop hike along the K to H to J to K portion of the Zaleski Backpack Trail.
  • November 11, 2007 - We hiked with Doug Albaugh, secretary of the Friends of the Lower Muskingum River (FLMR) on his 32 acres of land along the Muskingum River as well as the adjoining FLMR land, about 30 acres. The land is protected with FLMR conservation easements! We were blessed with lots of mowed trails, chestnut trees and delightful places to investigate and enjoy.   • December 9, 2007 - John Knouse, Andrew Bashaw and 4 other hardy souls braved dismal weather conditions for a 3.2 mile hike along the Long Run Segment in the New Straitsville Section of the North Country Trail (NCT) in Burr Oak State Park and Wayne National Forest (WNF) between State Route 13 and Fox Hunter Road.
  • January 13, 2008 - Eighteen folks joined Bob Scott Placier as he trapped birds, banded them and the children released the birds. It was a delightful hike as well!
  • February, 2008 - Delightful time had by all as son, Cole, and father, Pat Quackenbush led us on a thought provoking and windy tour of their Maple Syrup farm. They also filled our bellies with tasty treats!

  • April 13, 2008 - 19 folks hiked with naturalist, community activist & organizer, potter & photographer, Jim Hart, Rebekkah Wood and other naturalists. We all enjoyed the inexpensive photo magnifying loops as the kid in each of explored Hart’s 160 acre Perry County paradise.
  • May 11, 2008 - “Kids” of all ages enjoyed the fragile fern(s), Canadian Mayflower(s), blooming Magnolias & other Lake Katherine Nature Preserve wonders with Bob Scott Placier, Lohse’s, Pfeiffers, Schuberts & other naturalists as well as SE Ohio magazine folks. We are all so blessed to have so many gorgeous places to visit together!
  • May 24, 2008 - Camp of the Month folks gathered at Dow Lake (11661 State Park Road/Athens County Road 20, Athens, Ohio 45701), aka Strouds Run State Park around 4 p.m. and fun was had by all who attended!
  • June 8, 2008 - John and Mary Beth Lohse graciously hosted a hike around their around their land and through their solar-tempered home with a geothermal heat pump.
  • July, 13 2008 - Christmas Rocks Nature Preserve, near Amanda, Ohio, with ODNR conservationist, Jeff Johnson.
  • August 10, 2008 - Lynx Prairie with Bob Scott Placier.
